30th Birthday

Today was my 30th birthday.  Yep, I'm getting old.  Asher wanted to give me a special birthday present but he needed a little help so he called upon Jeff to help him.  Jeff made him a sign that said "Happy Birthday Mom" and put it on his running jacket.  Well Asher gets a little excited when you put his jacket on him so getting him to control himself and sit still was a little tricky.  Below are pictures that are very much Asher and how he rolls.  He's a happy kid.

"Sweet, I got my running jacket on.  Whoa, super excited, better get my ball (because that's what I always get when I'm excited)."

"I love my ball.  And I still got my jacket on so I'm still super excited."

"Jeff is trying to take a picture of me, maybe I should run over to him so he can pet me."

"That ball looks awesome, so awesome I am drooling, better lick my lips.....wait, I don't have lips....."

"Oh, you wanted me to lay nice so I could say 'Happy Birthday Mom', simple, no prob."

Long time....no post

It has been a terribly long time since I have posted here.  Wow.  Sorry to my few readers.  What's been going on?  Well lots, but then when I look back, not a lot but I always seem to run out of time.  It's been cold and snowy here for far too long.  I am so ready for some warm weather.  So what is new.....not a whole lot.  I have been training a lot.  Asher has been an awesome running partner.  I am building my mileage for the Big Sur Marathon on May 1 and he has been a great running partner.  He has done back-to-back 16 milers and has done great.  And he is loving every minute of it.  He wears his backpack and shoes and people check him out as we are running along.

Jeff, Asher and I have been trying to get out and do as much as we can with the sub-par weather.  We went to our first professional lacross game a few weeks ago and are going to another one this weekend.  The Buffalo Bandits.  Until I moved here I never knew there was a professional lacross league.  The games are pretty wild and fun.  They are rough and the crowd really gets into it, chanting and yelling and they play music throughout the whole game.  Pretty cool.

I took a couple trips up to Canada to get some lactate testing done for my coach and then I did the Shamrock 8K here in Buffalo.  The weather was terrible, rainy and 30+ mph winds but it was good to get out and race again.  I have my race schedule set through September so I'll get that posted on here as well.  Lots of new races to try which will be fun....and even a little traveling to new places as well.  I'm looking forward to it all.

I'll be better about updating in the future.  Promise.  I hope everyone is well and praying for spring.

Snowshoeing

We finally got out recently to snowshoe.  Last Sunday we went to Chestnut Ridge Park and today we went to 18 mile creek park.  Both were awesome.  Here are a few pics:

Asher

Today is a very special day for Asher and I.  5 years ago today, Asher came to live with me.  I struggle a bit to write this post.  It's not because I don't have anything to say about Asher, I just don't want to come across sounding too sappy, but really when you break it down into simple words, Asher is my best friend and the best thing that has ever happened to me.  Sappy or not, dog or not, he really truly is.  Now for the story for those of you that don't already know:

Asher came to me out of total happenstance, which is how most things happen in my life.  I was planning to get a standard poodle puppy in the near future so a 2.5 year old dog was not even in my mindset.  Well plans changed a bit with that.  On December 31st, 2005 a group of us went to my friend Shanna's house to do a New Year's Eve Day group indoor ride.  We get there and find out that her standard poodle puppy ran away.  She lives next to some woods and they think he took off after a deer.  And it was snowy.  So they were worried about him getting frost bite.  He was gone for several days but thankfully they found him, a little beat up but okay.  Anyway, so during this time that he was gone my friend was frantic, as most of us would be, her dogs were her kids.  She was calling all over, driving around looking for him and checking the paper (she lives by a bunch of hicks and was afraid someone would catch him and try and sell him which was why she was checking the paper).  One day while checking the paper she saw an ad for a black standard poodle for sale.  The description matched her dog Jack so she called the number.  The dog turned out to not be Jack after talking with the woman but she did find out he was a super loving dog that needed a good home where someone could spend more time with him and take care of him.  So immediately she calls me.  So we talk about it, I do a lot of thinking about it (I really wanted a puppy) and finally called the woman to talk about him and see if I could meet him.

So the next Friday night she brought him over after he got his haircut.  He immediately came up to me and let me pet him and talk with him.  She said he normally doesn't take well to people that he didn't know so we viewed that as a good sign.  We talked it over and I agreed to have him come and stay the following Friday for the weekend and see how things went.

So Friday the 13th of Jan 2006 came and up walks Dark Vader (the kids he first lived with named him that because he was black).  He gets all moved in and starts playing.  He came with a few toys, most of which he ripped up in a matter of a day or so and some food which he refused to eat.  I had gotten him some different food because I didn't like the food she was feeding him and he ate all of his new food and refused to touch his old food the first day I gave it to him.  After he got moved in I walked him over to my friend Brad's house and then to my friends Stacy and John's house.  Little did I know that Asher had no idea how to walk on a lease.  He was 2.5 years old and had never really been on a walk.  The lady said he was too wild on walks so she never took him.  So he was all over but super fun to watch.  At Stacy and John's he almost chewed through his leash before we left so it was a bit dicey to walk him home.  That night was rough.  He sat in his super little kennel that he used to spend 23 hours a day in crying.  I even brought him right next to me and he still just cried.  He was not house broken, yes at 2.5 years old which shows you how much he was out of his kennel, so I was afraid to let him out.  I think by the second or third night he was sleeping on my bed.  I couldn't take the crying.

The next day some friends and I were going to a speaker with the tri club so he had to stay home.  When my friends came over we found out he didn't like men and was scared of them as he started going after one of my friends and we couldn't figure out why.  Another black mark from his past (I think he was abused by his old owners random boyfriends that would come in and out).  After the meeting I wanted to try taking him running.  And this is where our real journey began.  He was an amazing runner.  He had all this energy and just needed an avenue to release it.  He about drug me down the sidewalk.  He was so fast and could run so easily.  We ran 4 miles that day and never looked back.  Only bad part was his paws weren't tough enough to handle all the new exercise he was getting, walking or running, so we had to get those toughened up a bit.  Several sores but after those were gone he was good to go.  Now he is my very best running partner.  He still jumps 6 feet in the air when I ask if he wants to go running and will go in any weather, rain, sleet, snow, anything.  He wears a backpack and carries his own water and wears shoes all winter to protect his feet.  Since I got him he has run 5788.5 miles and still loves every step.  He loves water and swimming and hunting for bunnies, squirrels and his newest animal deer.  He is always upbeat and willing to do anything.  And for that I am so thankful.

Asher came from a very bad situation where he was neglected and abused and came to live with me and has really found his true home.  He gave me a person that was there for me, all the time, something I really needed at the time.  He has saved me as much as I saved him and for that I am ever grateful to him. We both have dark pasts but together all we can see is a bright future.

Chestnut Ridge Park

The week before Christmas I had a day off so Asher and I were thinking up things to do.  Simple, let's go play in the snow.  One of Asher's favorite things to do (he has lots of favorite things).  We headed to a great county park here called Chestnut Ridge.  They don't plow most of the roads in the park in the winter so you can snowshoe, cross country ski or snowmobile through the woods all over the place.  So I just let Asher run.  He loved it.  I got a few pictures of a couple pretty streams and Asher in the snow.

Snowing....again

Yep, it's snowing again.  Kind of in spurts, sometimes hard, sometimes not at all.  And just a few short miles away, the sun was shinning.  You gotta love lake effect snow.  Good news is the lake is starting to slowly freeze over and when the lake freezes over the lake effect snow stops.  Still a long time but the process is starting.  It's been cold and very windy here this week.  Same story over the whole US.  The snow sure is pretty when you are inside though.  And oh how Asher loves to play in the snow.  It is rather scary when on the morning news they tell you, you will get 1-2 feet, yes feet, of snow like it's nothing.  Odd measuring snow in feet instead of inches.  Stay warm everyone!!

Fun stuff!!

I haven't been very good about updating my blog lately, sorry to my few followers.  I seem to run out of hours in the day.  I have lots of fun posts started so I will finish them soon.  Promise.  I also have lots of really good recipes to post too, I have been doing lots of baking!  Anyway, a quick little update of what's been going on since my last post, the Turkey Trot.  Thanksgiving came and went.  Lots to be thankful for.  Did some early morning shopping with the crazies on Black Friday and went to Canada and did some more shopping at Ikea on Saturday.  The following weekend we took a long weekend, packed up the car and headed down to Harrisburg, PA.  We went to Hershey World, Yuengling Brewery and Gettysburg.  That area, and the drive down there, are really pretty.  Lots of hills and pretty much not a straight road (which Asher didn't care for) but beautiful sights.  This trip would be awesome in the fall.  It was nice being able to run down there with no snow to contend with.  Back in Buffalo, we had just gotten about 20 inches and things were a mess so this was a nice little bit of relief.  This past weekend we took a quick trip to the largest Kazoo manufacturer in North America (who knew this was in our new backyard).  And the UWGB men came to Buffalo to play against the University at Buffalo (UB) so I got to see them play.  That was cool.  I was the only one cheering.  It was kind of funny.  Then that night I got to see my first NHL game.  We had our company Christmas party on Saturday and part of that was a game in our company suite.  We are the energy provider and a big supporter of the Buffalo Sabres so we get some VIP treatment.  It was an awesome experience.  One I plan to repeat again.  Things will calm down a bit now before the big trip back to Wisconsin for Christmas.  Oh and it's snowing here....again.  I think I better get used to this.

YMCA Turkey Trot

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Yesterday I did a traditional Turkey Trot.  In fact, this was the 115th annual turkey trot, here in Buffalo, NY.   This is the oldest consecutive running road race in North America.  This year they capped the race at 12,500 and it filled a couple weeks ago.  This was a 5 mile race starting north of downtown and you run into down town.  As I usually do, I ran before the race with Asher.  This has been our traditional for as long as I've had Asher.  He usually doesn't get to do the race but I still want him to be a part of the day so I run first with him.  I got changed and we headed to the race.  It was supposed to rain and was very windy.  I had shorts on but there weren't many to brave the bare legs.  We got lined up and the gun went off.  It took us 5 1/2 minutes to get to the start line.  Apparently we lined up pretty far back.  I spent pretty much the whole race running around people.  The race went well.  I felt awesome and had fun.  There were several people dressed up in costumes.  It was fun seeing all the costumes and running along a road I had never run on before.  I got close to the finish, picked up the pace the last two miles and kept passing people.  Got to the finish and headed back to find Jeff.  I found him at mile 4 and ran the rest of the way to the finish with him.  It was just misting but really turned out to be a perfect day to run.  Felt great, awesome company, great run.  Overall a great way to spend Thanksgiving.

Sprague Brook Park

This Saturday we did another new run location.  We headed down to run some trails at Sprague Brook Park.  I did a little research on it during the week and this looked like it should have some good running opportunities and I was totally blown away.  These trails were amazingly awesome.  Super technical, lots of roots, and trees and rocks and bridges made of rocks and trees and hills, oh the hills.  Probably the best trail running I have ever done.  We even did two full water creek crossings, where my shoes and socks were totally soaked.  We saw some white tailed deer too.  Very cool.  There were some amazingly steep cliffs that went down to a creek that we continued to wind around.  I wish I would have brought my camera.  Next time.  I did grab it after the run and took a few shots of the creek we ran around and through. Asher had such a blast and was exhausted the rest of the weekend!  I can't wait to go back.  A few pictures, more to come next time.

18 mile creek

Since moving, Asher and I have been exploring new running routes all over the place.  Last Saturday we did another new one and ran to a county park called 18 Mile Creek Park.  I found out about this park from a store owner in our town and heard it had great trails.  We weren't planning to run the trails, we'll head back someday and tackle those, but I wanted to see where this place was.  The creek that the route runs along is really cool.  Lots of character to the river which is cool.  I took a few pictures with my phone to share.

Pictures of the really cool creek.  Sorry they are sideways.  Blogger is being dumb and not posting them like they are saved.  Not sure what the deal is.

Long time....no update

I haven't written on here in a long time, sorry about that to my couple of readers.  Things have been going on I just haven't had a spare chance to write about them.  So I'll do my best to update you and keep you updated in the future.  First and foremost I have a new address and even a new time zone.  On October 24th Jeff, Asher and I packed up our vehicles and moved to Buffalo, NY.  I had a job transfer that I have known about since the first part of the year and this was finally the weekend to do it.  The moving truck came on Thursday and Friday, packed up all of my belongings and loaded them into this huge truck.  The guys were awesome.  Very friendly and helpful.  And best part is they packed everything and had to carry it and put it on and take it off the truck.  That's one of the worst parts of moving, in my opinion.  Jeff and I each drove our cars, Asher with me, to Cleveland on the 24th and the rest of the way to Buffalo on the 25th.  We lived on very minimal items until our stuff came on Thursday, the 28th.  I have never been so happy to see my stuff!  The movers moved everything into the apartment and storage unit in a matter of about 5 hours.  It was crazy and there was stuff everywhere!!  It was tricky getting everything put away and cleaned up.  I downsized from a house, with essentially 3 floors and a 2 car garage to a two bedroom apartment with no basement and a one stall garage.  Thank goodness for the storage unit!  It took almost two weeks but we finally got almost everything put away.  It was nice to be able to use the living room, workout room and kitchen again.  Now that we have everything moved in we have spent our time exploring the area and all there is to do here.  We don't know how long we will be here so we plan to live like tourists and see and do as much as we can.  I plan to write about as many of these as I can.  The weather has been mild so far, so that has allowed us to get in some outside activities which has been fun.  Asher and I have been having a blast finding new running routes around our apartment.  I have been biking on my trainer in our workout room and I found a great pool that is super quiet downtown that I have been swimming at.  The Y pool was hot and had too many floaters for me.  I miss my friends back home but am trying to stay in touch with them as much as possible.  I hope to get involved in some groups here to meet some people, not to replace, just in addition to the great people I have already met on my life's journey.  Apartment life is going okay so far.  I was very worried about how Asher would do with the move but he's doing great.  We have actually worn him out so much he's snoring by 9 at night.  Lots of dogs in the complex for him to check out too so we'll have to get out and meet them.  So I guess......let the journey begin....

1000 miles

This morning's run marked a momentous day for Asher, my standard poodle.  Today Asher passed 1,000 running miles for the year!!!  This is his favorite activity to do.  If you ask him if he wants to go running, he'll jump about 8 feet in the air just to make sure you understood, YES!!!  I am so lucky to have him as a running partner.  No matter the weather or time of day he is always ready to go whenever I ask.  It's something that we get to share together and is just awesome.  Awesome job little buddy and here's to many more.
